A library database is essentially a searchable index of journal articles and other materials that can be used for research, such as films, topic overviews, music, and even streaming video and images. The purpose of a database is to help you find materials that relate to your research topic.  Databases usually cover a broad range of published material, so you can find relevant items from many different sources and from a range of years.  Most databases provide online access to full text articles, streaming audio and video, images, etc.

The library Web site gives you access to over 100 databases. Some are multidisciplinary, and some cover a specific discipline, such as Literature, Music, History, Health Sciences, etc. KML's Databases by Subject page shows which databases are best for each type of research.  Academic Search Complete is a useful database for most disciplines.
