How do I place a book on hold?

Placing something on 'hold' in the Library world can sometimes mean different things.  We may ask you some questions if you talk to us about doing such a thing; please bear with us.  There are a few varities to this.  They are:

A. Hold on something that someone already has checked out

In some cases, you may want to put a hold on an item (usually a book) which someone else already has checked out.

While we can't force someone to return an item they check out, we can put you at the top of the list to be next in line for it.  You can do this on your own via your 'My Library' account. Once you are logged in with your Uindy credentials (I.e., everything in your Uindy email account before the @ sign is your username iamsmith@uindy.edu, so 'iamsmith' would be the username, and then the password that you use for your Uindy email account), you can then search for your particular book within our Library catalog.  Once you locate the title that you want, you will then see a small button above labelled 'Place hold'.  Click that button and you will recieve options on where to pick up that item (Krannert Memorial Library) when it is available for your, along with any time spans (say you were heading out of town for a trip).  If the item has the button, but then doesn't allow you to set up a hold, you will likely see a message why.  There may be other factors happening, such as something from the Reference collection or Archives.  (Please feel free to reach out to us for further assistance.)

When the item is returned, the library notifies you and holds the item at the Front Library Desk for you to pick up.

B. Hold on something that is on the shelf.

You might want to instead save time and put a hold on something that is already on the shelf.  Great, you are re planning ahead and we're happy to help you with that.  You can put a hold on something either:

1. Owned by us here at Krannert Memorial Library, or

  • If you want to put a hold on something that is already on the shelf here at KML, you can do this by using your 'My Library' account.
  • As soon as we have a staff member available to process your hold, the item is retrieved, the library notifies you and holds the item at the Front Library Desk for you to pick up.

2. Owned by another PALNI Library (PALSHARE)
  • Since we are part of a large consortium (It's mostly behind the scenes stuff, but you can find out more about PALNI here.), we have partnered with several other private colleges and universities.  The advanage of this is that you can easily travel to those locations and use your UIndy ID card in the same way you use your Library here at Krannert Memorial Library, as well as borrow/request things from those other libraries.  This can be done via your 'My Library' account. Once you are logged in with your Uindy credentials (I.e., everything in your Uindy email account before the @ sign is your username. Picture for example iamsmith@uindy.edu, so 'iamsmith' would be the username, and then the password that you use for your Uindy email account), you can then search for your particular book within our Library catalog.
  • Please note that PALSHAREs are physically travelling from those other library locations, so it may take a period of time.  However, it's often faster than a traditional Interlibrary Loan or ILL, which averages 7-14 days, since we work together often.  You can learn more about what Interlibrary loans are here.
